My verdict on ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs is the best AI voice tool in its category, and the one I pay for myself. I cloned my own voice on the Creator plan and use it to narrate my social media and Buildme Instagram videos, and the new Voice Design for Eleven v4 creates voices that sound almost identical to a human. Text to speech, voice cloning, dubbing, music and voice agents share one credit pool, and paid plans start at $6 a month with a commercial license. The weak spots are credit maths, a free plan you can't use commercially, and billing complaints on Trustpilot.
- Best for
- YouTubers, podcasters, course creators and small businesses who need natural voiceovers, a cloned voice or dubbing, and make up to a few hours of audio a month.
- Skip it if
- Anyone who needs free commercial audio, or developers who only need cheap, plain text to speech in bulk.

How I tested it
I pay for ElevenLabs on the Creator plan and use a clone of my own voice to narrate my social media and Buildme Instagram videos. I've also tried the new Voice Design for Eleven v4. I checked every price, plan limit and license rule against ElevenLabs' pricing page and docs on 5 Nov 2026, and read user reviews on Trustpilot and G2.

This ElevenLabs review answers one question: is it worth paying for? My answer is yes for most creators and small businesses, as long as you count credits before you choose a plan. It’s part of my AI tool reviews, where I cover the tools I’d use in a real business.
I pay for ElevenLabs on the Creator plan and still use it. I cloned my own voice and use it to narrate my social media videos and the Instagram videos for Buildme, my renovation company. For me it’s the best AI voice tool in its category. It saves me recording every voiceover myself, which used to mean retakes in a quiet room after work. Every price and rule below I checked on ElevenLabs’ own pages on 5 Nov 2026.
What is ElevenLabs and what does it do?
ElevenLabs is an AI audio platform. You type text and it reads it out in a natural-sounding voice. Around that core it now offers speech to text, a voice changer, sound effects, voice isolation, music, dubbing into other languages, and voice agents that can answer calls.
All of these draw from one shared monthly credit pool, per the ElevenLabs pricing page. For text to speech, ElevenLabs’ current models use 1 credit per character, and the plan comparison table works out to about 1,000 credits per minute of speech. That one number is the key to everything else in this review.

The newest voice model is Eleven v4, which ElevenLabs’ model docs describe as its most expressive model, with 90+ languages. The pricing table lists 74 languages for text to speech on every plan, so check your language on the model you plan to use.
How good are ElevenLabs voices?
This is where ElevenLabs earns its reputation. User reviews praise realism, the size of the voice library and how easy it is to find a usable voice. One US user on Trustpilot wrote that “AI cloning has been impressive,” and another said the voice catalog “is vast and easy for using.”
Audio quality depends on the plan. The comparison table lists 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz on Free and Starter, with 192 kbps available on higher plans. The Pro plan adds 44.1 kHz PCM (WAV-quality) output through the API. For YouTube, social and podcast voiceovers, 128 kbps is fine. For audiobooks or broadcast, look at Pro.
The newest thing I’ve tried is Voice Design for Eleven v4. Per ElevenLabs’ Voice Design docs, you describe a voice in a prompt (age, accent, tone, pacing), it generates three options, and you’re only charged the credits for the preview text. Voices made this way work with Eleven v4 and support audio tags. The voices I created sound almost identical to a human. The weak spot I’ve noticed is long sentences, which sometimes go flat, so I split them up and write numbers out as words.

| My use, Creator plan | Result |
|---|---|
| Plan | Creator, $22 a month, still active |
| What I use it for | Narration with my cloned voice on social and Buildme Instagram videos |
| Voiceovers made so far | 18 |
| Finished audio | About 40 minutes |
| Average voiceover length | About 2 minutes |
| Credits used (approx.) | About 52,000 of 121,000 in a typical month |
| Voiceovers I regenerated at least once | 7 of 18 |
Credits used came out higher than the finished minutes suggest, because regenerations and test takes also cost credits.
How does ElevenLabs voice cloning work?
There are two kinds of cloning, and the plan you buy decides which one you get. Here are the rules from ElevenLabs’ voice cloning docs, checked 5 Nov 2026:
| Cloning type | Audio you need | Plans | Clones included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instant Voice Cloning | About 1 to 2 minutes | Starter and up | Uses your custom voice slots |
| Professional Voice Cloning | 30 minutes to about 3 hours | Creator and up | 1 on Creator and Pro, 3 on Scale, 10 on Business |
Professional clones take 3 to 6 hours of fine-tuning, sometimes longer when the queue is busy. They also need a verification step, and ElevenLabs says you can only create a Professional Voice Clone of your own voice, even if someone else gives consent. That’s a sensible safety rule.

The free plan has no cloning. It gives you 3 custom voice slots for Voice Design, where you describe a voice in words and ElevenLabs creates it, according to the billing docs.
I cloned my own voice and it’s what narrates my social media and Buildme Instagram videos now. ElevenLabs says Professional Voice Clones are fully supported on Eleven v4. I recorded about 40 minutes of clean audio for the Professional clone, and it was ready the same day.
How much does ElevenLabs cost?
ElevenLabs has six public plans, from the pricing page on 5 Nov 2026:
- Free: $0, 10,000 credits a month, about 10 minutes.
- Starter: $6 a month ($1 the first month), 30,000 credits, about 30 minutes. Commercial license and Instant Voice Cloning.
- Creator: $22 a month ($11 the first month), 121,000 credits, about 121 minutes. Adds Professional Voice Cloning.
- Pro: $99 a month, 600,000 credits, about 600 minutes.
- Scale: $299 a month, 1.8M credits, 3 seats.
- Business: $990 a month, 6M credits, 10 seats and 10 Professional Voice Clones.

Extra minutes cost about $0.20 on Starter, $0.18 on Creator and $0.17 on Pro and up, per the comparison table. Yearly billing costs 10 months’ price, so Starter works out to $5 a month and Creator to $18.33. I break every plan down, with a calculator, in my ElevenLabs pricing guide.
Can you use ElevenLabs audio commercially?
Only on a paid plan. ElevenLabs’ help article Can I publish the content I generate on the platform? says the free plan “does not include a commercial license and cannot be used for any commercial purpose.” If you publish free plan content, you must credit ElevenLabs with “elevenlabs.io” or “11.ai” in the title.
Paid plans include a commercial license. Audio made while you’re subscribed can be used commercially indefinitely, even after you cancel. Two catches: content made before or after a paid subscription is non-commercial, and anything made with Beta Services can’t be used commercially at all. The full rules are in the ElevenLabs Terms of Service.
Max’s take: I only generated client-facing audio once I was on a paid plan. If the audio goes in an ad, a client video or anything you earn money from, pay the $6 for Starter before you generate it. Upgrading later doesn’t make free plan audio commercial.

ElevenLabs reviews: what do users say?
The user picture is split. On G2, ElevenLabs shows about 4.5 out of 5 from roughly 1,150 reviews. On Trustpilot it has a TrustScore of 2.9 from 1,235 reviews (both checked 5 Nov 2026, G2 via search results).
ElevenLabs user ratings, out of 5
- G2 (about 1,150 reviews)4.5
- Trustpilot (1,235 reviews)2.9
The happy reviews focus on the product: voice realism, cloning, low latency for apps, and having voice, music and sound effects in one place. The unhappy reviews focus on money. One US user wrote that after downgrading, “all 200,000 of my unused credits disappeared instantly.” That matches ElevenLabs’ own rule: downgrading or canceling forfeits unused paid credits at the end of the cycle.
Another reviewer said switching from an annual to a monthly plan “can’t be done from the website.” So the product reviews are strong, and the billing reviews are a warning to read the rules first.
What are the downsides of ElevenLabs?
Here’s what to know before you pay, all from ElevenLabs’ own docs:
- Credits go fast on long audio. At about 1,000 credits a minute, Creator’s 121,000 credits cover about two hours of speech a month. An audiobook can eat that in a few chapters.
- Credits are shared. Dubbing costs 2,000 to 10,000 credits per minute and music 900, per the pricing FAQ. Use one product heavily and the others get less.
- Downgrades cost you. Unused paid credits expire when a downgrade or cancellation takes effect.
- Free means non-commercial. You can’t monetize free plan audio, even later.
- Regenerations cost credits. You’re charged per generation, with only a limited number of free regenerations.
ElevenLabs credits used per minute of audio
- Dubbing (high end)10,000
- Dubbing (low end)2,000
- Text to speech~1,000
- Music900
Tip: Use your credits before you downgrade. Credits roll over for up to two months on paid plans, but they disappear when you move to a lower plan.
ElevenLabs vs Murf, WellSaid and OpenAI TTS
All of these turn text into speech, but they’re built for different buyers. Here are starting prices from each vendor, checked 5 Nov 2026:
| Tool | Free plan | Paid from | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ElevenLabs | 10,000 credits a month, non-commercial | $6 a month | Creators who want cloning, dubbing and natural voices |
| Murf AI | Yes | $19 a month billed yearly (Creator) | Business voiceovers in a studio editor |
| WellSaid | 3 minutes a month, no commercial rights | $19 a month, or $10 billed yearly | Corporate training narration |
| OpenAI TTS | No | $15 per 1M characters (tts-1) | Developers who need cheap bulk speech |
Choose WellSaid if you make training content. The WellSaid pricing page lists Starter at $19 a month with 20 downloadable minutes, or $10 a month billed yearly, and Pro at $49 a month.
Choose Murf if you want a simple studio for business voiceovers. Murf’s pricing page loads by script and wouldn’t render for me, so the $19 a month billed yearly figure is from Murf’s page as quoted in search results on 5 Nov 2026. Check murf.ai/pricing before you buy.
Choose OpenAI TTS if you’re a developer. The OpenAI API pricing page lists tts-1 at $15 and tts-1-hd at $30 per 1M characters, with no cloning.
What about Play.ht? Several 2026 roundups report it shut down at the end of 2025 after Meta bought PlayAI. I couldn’t reach play.ht to confirm, so I’ve left it out of the table.
Who should use ElevenLabs?
Use it if you make YouTube videos, podcasts, courses, ads or social clips and want a voice that doesn’t sound robotic. It also suits businesses that want one voice across many languages. If you’d like an AI avatar to speak your voiceover on camera, read my HeyGen review. If you need a phone bot, see my guide to the AI voice agent options, as ElevenLabs sells those too.
Skip it if you need free commercial audio, or you only need plain text to speech in bulk through an API, where OpenAI is cheaper.
Pick your plan like this. Work out your minutes first. My Speech time calculator turns a script into a running time. Up to 30 minutes a month fits Starter, up to about 2 hours fits Creator, and around 10 hours fits Pro.
Minutes of speech included per month, by ElevenLabs plan
- Free ($0)~10
- Starter ($6)~30
- Creator ($22)~121
- Pro ($99)~600
My verdict: ElevenLabs is the best AI voice tool in its category, and I’m still paying for Creator. I’d only move to Pro if I started making long videos or audiobooks.
If you’re comparing other tools for your business, my Base44 review is the next one I’d read.
How ElevenLabs scored
My overall score is a weighted average of the six scores below. Voice quality counts most, because a cheap voice tool is useless if listeners can tell it's AI. ElevenLabs reviews from real users
My test is one person's experience, so I checked what paying users say. On ElevenLabs' Trustpilot page it has a TrustScore of 2.9 from 1,235 reviews, checked 5 Nov 2026. On G2 it shows about 4.5 out of 5 from roughly 1,150 reviews (from G2's listing in search results, 5 Nov 2026, as G2 blocked my direct check). The split is telling: product reviews are strong, while the 1 star reviews are mostly about credits and billing.
“Their latency it top notch and AI cloning has been impressive.”
“The catalog of voices of ElevenLabs is vast and easy for using.”
“having voice, music and sound effects in one place saves us a lot of time.”
“When I downgraded to the Starter Plan, all 200,000 of my unused credits disappeared instantly.”
Questions people ask
01Is ElevenLabs trustworthy?
Yes, as a company. ElevenLabs is a large, venture-backed AI audio company, and its own site reported a $22 billion valuation on 30 Sep 2026. It requires voice verification for Professional Voice Clones and lets you clone only your own voice that way. The trust issues users raise are about billing: Trustpilot shows 2.9 from 1,235 reviews, mostly credit and subscription complaints.
02How much does ElevenLabs cost?
ElevenLabs has a free plan with 10,000 credits a month. Paid plans are Starter at $6 a month ($1 the first month), Creator at $22 ($11 the first month), Pro at $99, Scale at $299 and Business at $990. Yearly billing costs 10 months' price. Prices from elevenlabs.io/pricing, checked 5 Nov 2026.
03Is ElevenLabs the best AI voice?
In my view, yes. I pay for it, narrate my videos with my cloned voice, and Voice Design for Eleven v4 sounds almost identical to a human. It's the strongest all-round option I've used: natural voices, Instant and Professional cloning, 74 text to speech languages and dubbing in one account. It isn't the cheapest. OpenAI's TTS API starts at $15 per 1M characters, which beats ElevenLabs on price for plain bulk speech.
04What's better than 11 labs?
It depends on the job. WellSaid is built for corporate training narration, from $19 a month. Murf suits business voiceovers in a studio editor, from $19 a month billed yearly. OpenAI TTS is cheaper for developers who don't need cloning. For voice quality and features in one place, I haven't found a clear winner over ElevenLabs.
05Can I use ElevenLabs voices commercially?
Only on a paid plan. ElevenLabs' help center says the free plan does not include a commercial license, and free content must credit ElevenLabs with "elevenlabs.io" or "11.ai" in the title. Audio made during a paid subscription can be used commercially indefinitely, except content from Beta Services.
06Can ElevenLabs clone my voice?
Yes, from the $6 Starter plan. Instant Voice Cloning needs about 1 to 2 minutes of clean audio. Professional Voice Cloning, from the $22 Creator plan, needs 30 minutes to about 3 hours of audio, a verification step and usually 3 to 6 hours of fine-tuning.
07Do ElevenLabs credits roll over?
On paid plans, yes. Unused credits roll over for up to two months, so your balance can reach 3 times your monthly quota. If you downgrade or cancel, unused paid credits expire at the end of the billing cycle. Free plan credits don't roll over.
Should you use ElevenLabs?
Overall score
4.6/5Based on my own testing
Would I recommend it?
Yes
ElevenLabs is the AI voice tool I'd start with. Use the free plan to hear the voices and try Voice Design, but don't publish anything commercial from it. If you like the output, Starter at $6 a month gets you a commercial license and Instant Voice Cloning, and Creator at $22 adds a Professional Voice Clone. Count your minutes first: about 1,000 credits buy one minute of speech. I'm staying on Creator. It's the cheapest plan with a Professional Voice Clone, and I use mine to narrate my videos.
- Best for
- YouTubers, podcasters, course creators and small businesses who need natural voiceovers, a cloned voice or dubbing, and make up to a few hours of audio a month.
- Skip it if
- Anyone who needs free commercial audio, or developers who only need cheap, plain text to speech in bulk.
